The Tesseract

also known as The Space Stone · The Cube · The Cosmic Cube

One glowing cube, eighty years of catastrophe, and the war it finally started.

10 entries 8 films 2 episodes 19h 35m

The Space Stone spends most of its MCU life disguised as a blue cube that humans keep trying to weaponise — first HYDRA, then S.H.I.E.L.D., then a Kree scientist hiding it in a light-speed engine. It changes hands roughly every decade, always violently, until Thanos crushes the casing open in the first five minutes of Infinity War. Follow it and you get the spine of Phases One to Three in ten entries, plus the time-travel detour that accidentally created the Loki series.

  1. Captain America: The First Avenger

    Film · 2011124m

Johann Schmidt takes the Tesseract from a church vault in Tønsberg in 1942 and Arnim Zola builds HYDRA's entire energy-weapon arsenal around it. It burns a hole through the Valkyrie's hull and sinks into the Arctic, where Howard Stark dredges it up while searching for Steve Rogers.

  2. What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?

    What If...? · S1 E1 · 202133m

An alternate 1943 where Steve never takes the serum: Schmidt still gets the Tesseract, and Steve pilots the Tesseract-powered HYDRA Stomper armour instead of wearing the uniform. Schmidt uses the cube to tear open a portal and pull a creature through, and Captain Carter shoves it back — landing herself in 2011.

  3. Captain Marvel

    Film · 2019124m

Set in 1995, this is the cube's missing decades filled in: Mar-Vell had quietly taken it off S.H.I.E.L.D.'s books to build a light-speed engine in an orbital lab. Goose the Flerken swallows it whole, then coughs it back up onto Nick Fury's desk, returning it to S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.

  4. Iron Man 2

    Film · 2010125mcameo

A cameo only — the cube itself is nowhere near this film. A sketch of the Tesseract turns up among Howard Stark's old research materials, the earliest hint the movies dropped that Howard had spent years studying it after 1945.

  5. Thor

    Film · 2011114m

The payoff is entirely in the post-credits scene: Nick Fury takes Erik Selvig into a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility and shows him the Tesseract, calling it a source of unlimited power. Loki, unseen and reflected in the glass, is already whispering in Selvig's ear.

  6. The Avengers

    Film · 2012143m

S.H.I.E.L.D. is using the cube at Project PEGASUS to build Phase 2 weapons when Loki arrives through it and takes it, then has Selvig build the portal machine that opens the Chitauri invasion over Manhattan. After the battle Thor takes it back to Asgard, where it is filed in Odin's vault.

  7. Thor: Ragnarok

    Film · 2017130m

Briefly and consequentially: as Asgard burns, Loki walks through Odin's vault to trigger Surtur and is seen palming the Tesseract on his way out. That single grab is why he and Thor are on the Statesman when Thanos boards it.

  8. Avengers: Infinity War

    Film · 2018149m

The opening scene ends the Tesseract as an object. Loki hands it over to spare Thor, Thanos crushes the casing in his fist, and the raw Space Stone goes into the Gauntlet — after which it is a power source, not a prize.

  9. Avengers: Endgame

    Film · 2019181m

The time heist revisits the cube twice, and this is where its chronology gets knotted. In 2012 the Avengers fumble it and a 2012 Loki vanishes with it, which is why they detour to 1970 Camp Lehigh to steal a second Tesseract out of S.H.I.E.L.D. storage; Steve returns both to their exact moments at the end.

  10. Glorious Purpose

    Loki · S1 E1 · 202152m

This is the fate of the 2012 cube that Loki escapes with during Endgame's failed heist. He materialises in the Gobi Desert, the TVA arrest him within seconds, and Casey files the Tesseract in a drawer alongside a pile of other Infinity Stones that TVA staff use as paperweights.
